Primitive Stars

The Primitive Star was first made popular as a barn star sometime after the civil war in the 1820s. Individuals used these handcrafted stars (usually out of scrap metal) to adorn their barns or they were painted directly onto the building. This explains why you can purchase such a wide variety of wooden primitive stars to add to your primitive décor.
They were also considered a sign of good luck and painted different colors which represented different things. Black and blue was meant as a sign of protection and red meant passion. White was a sign of purity and green meant growth of fertility of the crops the farmer had planted. Brown was a symbol of mother earth, friendship and strength.
The Amish country took great interest in how they painted their stars and colors had a tremendous amount of significance to them.
