Raggedy Ann was created by Johnny Gruelle for his daughter. Finding a rag doll in the attic inspired this authors leap into the Raggedy world, and led him to Raggedy Ann, and later her brother Raggedy Andy. He turned the characters into a series of children's books, the first being published in 1918. Children could buy the book and their very own Raggedy Ann doll to cuddle with and share in the stories.

Raggedy Ann was, and still is, the world's most well known rag doll. Her stories have been told and retold, made into short and feature length films, and even a comic book. Her adventures and candy heart made her a kind, and sweet addition to any child's library.

When Gruelle's daughter died at age 13, he believed it was caused by a small pox vaccine she had been given at school without parental permission, and he became an advocate against vaccinations. The doll, being linked with him, also became a political representation of his daughter and her tragedy.
