Primitive Aprons
Primitive aprons reflect the material, workmanship and efforts of a time period from long ago. How many of my antique photographs show a woman working, knitting or just sitting around the house in a very old apron? Plenty. I can tell you that.
The full apron was more protective than its half match. It protected many a shirt from all of the hazards of living in that time period. Maybe this one was preferred for its neck tie rather than waist tie?
The half apron wasn't as heavy and still had enough pockets to assist the homemaker of that era. Perhaps, some would save the half apron for a somewhat relaxed Sunday after having made dinner, milked the cows, disciplined the children and fed the dog?
The materials used to make these wonderful pieces of Americana match the home sewn bonnets, settlers bag, cooking mitts, dresses, skirts, shirts, shorts, pants and socks that were constructed at that time.
Copycats are actually somewhat costly. They don't look as nice, neat or tidy and they're not as durable. When the sewers of yore sat down to cut material and sew it together, they had strength in mind. They knew that children would be climbing on them, there would be crops sticking up out of them, scissors would dangle from them, they would soon be singed from dinner fire and those big pockets would soon be heavy with some sort of rag or sock to be darned.
Today's woman can still be seen sporting an apron. And if its primitive that she wants, then she has merely to bid on the real thing at ebay. It just might match your primitive decor!
